What is biophilic design?
Biophilia is a term rooted in Greek words for “life” and “love” or “affection”. A literal translation would be “love of life”. With its use in architecture and design, the concept is based on the natural connections that we as human have with nature. This is not simply a philosophical approach, as there is enough scientific research to prove the positive affect it has on our mental and physical well-being. One could say, a biophilic approach to design is also a holistic approach to our health. But why?
Major mood booster
One would hardly argue the calming affect that the soft sounds and motions of a breeze passing through the trees has on our emotions. We feel more peaceful and therefore happier and more focused. This positive boost not only contributes to a productive life but greatly improves our chances of getting the restful sleep we need to stay healthy. Of course, it’s not just about the trees.
The power of the sun
It is not a new discovery that we prefer natural lighting over artificial. But it is more than comfort benefits. We have a little something called “circadian rhythm”, which is a fascinating subject in of itself. But in terms of lighting, simply put, within our 24 hour cycle we go through a series of mental and physical behavioral changes, and those changes can easily be thrown off balance. You guessed it, lighting is a key player. Research has shown that by incorporating more natural light into our lives throughout the day will work to keep our “rhythm” on point and the benefits maximized. An additional bonus of course being the energy bill savings. However, there are even artificial lighting systems that work to mimic this process and can play a role in biophilic design strategies.
Water is life
No surprise there. But aside from sustaining life through consumption, just simply being near it can make a “world” of difference! How so? We’re talking lowered blood pressure, lowered heart rate, and it seems to contribute to an overall healthier cognitive function. Have you been putting off installing that fish aquarium you always wanted? Maybe taking a closer look at the principles in biophilic design will be just the motivation you need to get started or some other means to put yourself near a relaxing source of H20.
This is only a brief look a few beneficial aspects of biophilia and the role it plays in design and our own well being. There are many articles devoted to the subject that can be easily accessed online. The overall idea of course is blending elements of the outside world with your interior environment(s).
